So in "THIS" case, yes, Windows 7 should use the same folder and partition structure as XP The installer should switch to GPT if you are in UEFI mode If you are in Legacy BIOS mode and an MBR partition already exists, all modern versions of Windows should follow the existing structure That should depend on whether you are in UEFI mode or Legacy BIOS mode In any case doesn't Wiin 7 use the same folder and partition structure as XP ? It's quite a long time since I did a clean install of Win 7 but if you are doing a clean install the installer should do all that for you.

Which version of Windows 7 are you trying to install and where did you get it?Įdited by Some-Other-Guy, 01 November 2020 - 10:19 AM. If XP installs, then Windows 7 should install fine

You may have bad install media or something else is going on Windows 7 / 8.1 and 10 all install just fine to an MBR partition without UEFI support It also does NOT require UEFI in order to install Windows 7 It is NOT too old, and no, you are not stuck with XP It is simply the fact the computer is too old and that I am stuck on XP or Windows VISTA? Windows 7 USB just gives me "expanding windows files" and sticks or informs me that additional drivers are needed once I attempt to install it to the hard drive. I have attempted to install the BIOS drivers from the HP website but they will not install. I have read online something to do with the BIOS and that it is legacy and needs to be UEFI before W7 or later can be installed on it. If I create a bootable Windows 7 on USB all I get is "loading files" and it never progresses any further. The big problem is I cannot upgrade to Windows 7 and seem stuck with XP. In despair I burnt Windows XP to a disk and it installed. I installed Zorin Linux but he did not like it so I am tried to reinstall Windows 7 but it would not take it. It had the Windows 7 operating system on it (if I recall correctly). A friend gave me his computer to upgrade. I will give a detailed background to what I am having trouble with.
